During this year’s Natural Products Expo East at the Philadelphia Convention Center, booths were packed with a wide array of new salty and savory snacks. From plant-based meat sticks to grab-and-go seaweed packs to jalapeno potato crisps, there were plenty of options sure to please every consumer’s palette.

From ongoing supply chain disruptions to economic instability, food makers continued to grapple with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2021. However, the industry pressed onward embracing challenges and pivoting with new product lines, formats and strategies to keep their heads above water. Considering all of the upheaval of 2020, the theme of this past year is slightly more positive with plenty of new entries to the industry, investments in plant-based and strategic acquisitions.

Shaun White, regarded as the greatest action sports athlete of all time and Global Brand Ambassador for KRAVE Jerky, announced the latest product of their partnership: a new Gold Label, 100% grass-fed beef jerky flavor inspired by his Olympic achievements and taste for adventure.

Though jerky brand Krave helped create the meat snacks craze, in the years since its launch in 2009 the brand lost some of its cache and faced increased competition. Now rejoined with its original owner, the company announced today new packaging and product innovations designed to hopefully reclaim its premium positioning.

Today incubator and investment firm Sonoma Brands announced the acquisition of premium jerky brand Chef’s Cut. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Maybe the old saying is wrong: You can go home again. Today Sonoma Brands, the holding company and investment group for snack brands started by Jon Sebastiani, announced the acquisition of KRAVE — the artisanal jerky and meat snack brand Sebastiani built and subsequently sold to The Hershey Company in 2015.

Hershey’s announced plans to sell off once high-flying jerky brand KRAVE, along with artisan chocolate brands Scharffen Berger and Dagoba, during a quarterly earnings call that reflected a few months of dramatically-shifting consumer habits toward the confection company’s chocolate products.
